The second edition of the UCSC Linguistics Association Newsletter
December 1, 1978
The Board is preparing a listing of courses of interest to Linguistics students
which should be available the first week in December.
T-Shirts
Let the world know you're a linguist! We are going to print linguistics T-shirts.
Bring your dark-colored T-shirt and $1.00 to Dyann Paynovitch (or collection box
in Bill's office). The T-shirts will say:
UCSC LINGUIST
in white ink.
Linguists unite! You have only your *!
Colloquia
Will Vroman and Brent de Chene will be giving their audience-participation
colloquium, "Cape Verde Creole: A Problem for Phonological Theory" in 237A
Stevenson (across from Bill's office) on Tuesday, December 5, at 7:30 p.m.
Try to forget about impending finals for a couple of hours while stimulating
your intellect and sharpening your interest. You can't lose.
On Monday, Ruth Tsagolova of Moscow State University is giving a talk at
Berkeley on "Problems of Translation, Dictionaries and Terminology at Moscow
University: How Do Different Societies Deal with These Problems?" It will
be in the Slavic Department Library, 284 Dwinelle Hall, at 4 p.m.
Linguistics Society of America
The LSA will be holding its annual summer institute in Salzburg, Austria,
July 23rd through August 31st. Interested students should contact one of
the faculty for more details.
Reaggregation and Review
Under the reorganization plan, Linguistics may be entirely housed at Stevenson,
with the possible exception of Arthur Spears, who is an Oakes professor. The
proposed cut of 20 faculty members, even if it goes through, will not affect Linguistics.
