UCSC REVIEW NEWS AND NOTES ABOUT THE CAMPUS, COLLEGE MEMBERS AND FRIENDS. PUBLISHED INTERMITTENTLY. BY THE OFFICE OF UNIVERSITY RELATIONS, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA CRUZ. The second issue of the UCSC Review is being published a bit later than we had hoped, but published it is. Responses to the first issue were happily beyond our expectations, both in number and in favorable comment. Those who included comments on the Review itself often remarked on its value as a source for "keeping posted" . . . "Gossip is fun," David Brick (Stevenson/'69); "It is amazing how one can lose touch with close undergraduate friends in such a short time," Al Harris (Cowell/'68); "I was delighted to receive this first issue of your gossip and 'what in the hell happened to him' sheet," Kathleen Owyang (Cowell/'69). There was also quite a bit of comment about our failure to include a more thorough compilation of former students in the first issue . . . "Hope your list of people gets even more comprehensive," Dean Steven Corey (Stevenson/'70); "As much as I enjoyed the list, I found it somewhat incomplete ... I also noticed that it was lopsided, in that it only recorded the activities of those who 'made it' in the conventionally accepted channels," John Rippey (Cowell/'71). To those of you who may have made similar observations, please know that it is not our intention to be "selective." We canvassed every source we could think of to compile the student lists in our first issue, obtaining most of the 301 entries virtually one by one to launch the publication. The second issue contains each and every note received in response to our request for news items. We fully intend to publish "all the news that's fit to print," as the New York Times would have it, in future editions. If you are one of the several thousand former UCSC students who have yet to drop us a line, please do so now for the next issue: we are aiming for a fall publication date. The second issue of the Review is still in a fledgling state. Although we include several new features, "In Print/UCSC Book Reviews and Publication Announcements;" "In Brief/ Items of Interest to the UCSC Community," and "In Anticipation/Forthcoming Cultural Events at UCSC" (the latter suggested by Lorraine (Stevenson/'69) and Wallace (Cowell/'69) Farrelly), limited space precludes our being able to take advantage of a number of excellent suggestions for improvements ... "How about the present whereabouts and activities of faculty no longer at UCSC?" Don Weiss (Cowell/'71); "... a journal (that would) provide a channel for UCSC people to write/ publish, etc.," Julie Ann Lepick (Stevenson/'70); "... perhaps you would publish the 'in retrospect' impressions of some of the graduates . . ." John Rippey (Cowell/'71).
