On Campus FOR THE UC SANTA CRUZ COMMUNITY January 27, 1982 [Photograph] The UC Regents, at their January meeting, approved the appointment of Ralph C. Guzman, professor of politics and community studies, as Provost of Merrill College. Guzman will take over the provostship from George Von der Muhll, who announced his resignation last fall. Von der Muhll will continue as associate professor of politics and fellow of Merrill College. Personnel offices merge into one As of the beginning of this quarter, the Staff Personnel Office and the Academic Office have been merged into a single operation, the Personnel Office, under the direction of Robert Bickal, manager of personnel and labor relations. The new Personnel Office will report to the Academic Chancellor, John Marcum. Barbara Nielsen, formerly the coordinator of academic personnel, has resigned in order to take a position with the American Association of University Professors in San Francisco. Her place as coordinator of Academic Personnel in the newly combined office has been taken on an interim basis by Barbara Brogan. The two branches will continue to operate out of their separate offices— the Staff Personnel arm in Communications, x2011, and the Academic Personnel arm in McHenry Library. x4587. Wildest hopes exceeded The final results from the 1981 Campus United Way Drive are in, and UCSC's staff and faculty have succeeded in pledging more than was originally expected or aimed for. With a goal of $25,000, a little over 600 employees donated more than $26,600, an 18% increase over last year. For the second time, united Way campaigners prepared a pledge card so that employees could arrange a simple payroll deduction. Campaign chair Lou Fackler reports that UCSC was the biggest contributor in the "public service" institution category. With almost $56,500 raised in this division, UCSC's contribution of $26,600 was almost half of the total. Getting ready for The Big One Gummed labels with the campus emergency phone number (x2345) should be widely distributed on campus phones, especially public-access and hallway phones. Do yourself and your co-workers a favor by checking your building to see which phones need stickers. Stickers are available by calling the Telecommunications Office, x2168. The office will also supply, if needed, stickers giving the emergency number to use when calling from a private phone (429-2345). Women's Brown Bag lunch series Two speakers are scheduled for the February Brown Bag lunch series. Olga Euben. Associate Director of Admissions, will speak about her career on Tuesday, February 2, 1982. Susan Burcaw, Executive Assistant to the Chancellor, will speak on Tuesday, February 16, 1982. These informal gatherings are held in Room 101 of Classroom Unit I (Women's Re-Entry Center). All staff women are invited to attend. Volunteers needed in S.L. Valley The "disaster" is by no means over for many residents in the San Lorenzo Valley, who are still digging out the debris and mud left by January's storm and flood. Felton's Red Cross chapter, headquartered at St. John's Church in Felton, still needs volunteers to help in the digging-out effort and other forms of clean-up. You don't have to be big and brawny—just available. The Red Cross is also seeking donations of canned goods, paper goods, and money. If you can help, please call 335-9598. On Campus and Staff Personnel Notes merged Beginning with this current issue, On Campus and Staff personnel Notes are merging into a weekly publication, which will include general-interest articles as well as specific Personnel Office information. The decision to merge the two publications and increase the publication schedule was made so that campus news could be communicated on a regular basis through one central campus publication. Units interested in submitting newsworthy items should submit articles to the Editor, On Campus. Public Information Office. Deadline for copy is Friday, 5 p.m. Articles should be double-spaced and should include the name and a contact phone number of the article writer.
