On Campus FOR THE UC SANTA CRUZ COMMUNITY April 27, 1982 Living Music Fest enters last month The Festival of Living Music will present three concerts in May, the last month of early music for the 1982 season. On May 2 the Festival offers "French Baroque Delights" with guest artist Carol Plantamura, soprano, and Genette Foster, baroque violin. Joining the guest artists will be Festival players Mary Lombardi, viola, Leslie Hirsch, violin, and Linda Burman-Hall, harpsichord. The Festival was honored to perform this same program at the J. Paul Getty Museum in mid-March. The program includes works by Monteverdi, Leclair, Revel, and Marais. The concert begins at 8 p.m. in Calvary Episcopal Church, Lincoln and Center Streets in Santa Cruz. On May 22 and May 23 the Festival gives its "Bach and Handel Extravaganza" concerts. Among the many composers active in the early eighteenth century, Bach and Handel stand out as two giants of the Baroque period. The program will feature Bach's Concerto for two harpsichords, and Cantata No. 189 with tenor soloist Gene Albin; Handel's Flute Sonata with soloist Leta Miller, and Handel's Organ Concerto with Linda Burman-Hall performing with the Festival Players and guest artists. The Saturday, May 22 concert will be held in Watsonville at the United Presbyterian Church, 112 E. Beach Street. On Sunday, May 23, the same program (partially funded by the City Arts Commission of Santa Cruz) will be presented at the First Congregational Church, 900 High Street, in Santa Cruz. Both concerts begin at 8 PM. Tickets for these May concerts are available at Cymbaline Records in Santa Cruz, and at the UCSC Campus Box Office. General admission is $6.50; senior and student tickets are $4.50. For more details, write P.O. Box 482, Santa Cruz 95061, or phone (408) 336-2173. Campus smoking rules revised Concern over smoking on the campus continues to be an issue as additional medical information reveals the hazards of tobacco smoke to non-smokers as well as to smokers, says Chief Financial Officer Wendell Brase. As a result, the campus Space Committee has recommended the prohibition of smoking in all general classrooms and seminar rooms under the control of the registrar. Campus smoking regulations have been revised to elaborate this policy, as well as other prohibitions regarding smoking. In essence, the revised policy prohibits smoking in all regularly scheduled teaching rooms. Copies of the policy are available from Brase's office in Central Services. Cinco de Mayo festival at Oakes In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, Oakes College will sponsor an all- day festival Saturday, May 1, in the Oakes College Science Center and Room 105. Games, music, food, dancing, and a 7:30 p.m. screening of Luis Valdez's "Zoot Suit" will be part of the day, beginning at 9 a.m. For more information, contact Luis Rodriguez at 425-8258.
