On Campus FOR THE UC SANTA CRUZ COMMUNITY July 7, 1982 [Photograph] Eugene Cota-Robles Provost changes at two colleges Professor of Biology Eugene Cota-Robles has been named provost of Crown College effective September 1. He will succeed the current provost, Professor of German and Comparative Literature Siegfried B. Puknat, who will retire from the University after 34 years of service. Cota-Robles's current scholarly activities are in the areas of electron microscopy of procaryotic cells and mutogenicity of embedding resins used in electron microscopy. He received a B.S. degree in 1950 from the University of Arizona and an M.A. degree in 1954 and a Ph.D. in 1956 from the University of California, Davis. From 1958 to 1970 Cota-Robles was on the faculty of UC Riverside. From 1970 to 1973. he served as professor at Pennsylvania State University. In other administrative actions, Philip F. Nelson, who came to Santa Cruz from Yale a year ago to head Porter College and serve as director of the arts, has resigned those positions. "It has become clear that many of the objectives which brought me to this University cannot be realized," says Nelson. His resignation will be effective July 1. During the coming year, Nelson will serve as a special assistant to the chancellor, a search committee for a new provost will be appointed, and an acting provost will be named for Porter in the interim. Staff group looking for health care alternatives A group of about 50 staff members has met with the chancellor's assistant, Susan Burcaw, and Personnel Manager Bob Bickal in order to investigate alternatives to the current health care insurance options. In order to pursue the matter, it was agreed that more information from staff members was needed to get a sense of campus attitudes. Therefore, the group has put together the following survey. As Mardi Brown in Admissions says, response from staff "may make the difference" in being offered suitable health care insurance packages. Responses should be made by Friday, July 9, to Mardi Brown, Admissions Office, 150 Central Services. This survey is primarily for staff to ascertain if there is sufficient interest in a health maintenance plan provided by an HMO* as a third alternative to our present health benefits. 1. I would be interested in a health maintenance plan in Santa Cruz County as a substitute for my current insurance coverage. 2. If our alternative HMO was Kaiser, would it be a feasible option for you (knowing that the Kaiser facility is located in San Jose)? 3. If we cannot have an HMO plan at a substantially lower premium than presently offered, will you be forced to drop your current health insurance coverage due to the increase incurred by the employee this year? 4. Or would you maintain your current health insurance coverage? Please print: Name Department Comments *HMO = Health Maintenance Organization, or a "Kaiser-like" plan, that offers both regular medical care (doctor's office visits, physicals, prescriptions) and major medical coverage (hospital, emergency, and surgery). Summer jitney service to UCB A new summer schedule for the intercampus bus service between the Santa Cruz and Berkeley campuses has been set by Transportation Services. Monday through Friday, the jitney will depart UCSC at 8:15 a.m. and arrive in Berkeley at 10:15 a.m. Return trip will depart Berkeley at 2:45 p.m. and arrive in Santa Cruz at 4:45 p.m. The Saturday jitney will be discontinued for the summer session. The $5 fee charged to faculty and staff will be dropped for the summer schedule. Reservations for jitney service may be made by calling x2803 between 8 a.m. and 12 noon. Jazzercise summer class Jazzercise classes with Meg will be held this summer Monday and Wesnesdays at 5:15 p.m., in the East Field House. You may join at any time. Men are welcome too. Register in class and bring a towel or mat. Call Meg Sellery for more information at 423-8085. Units interested in submitting newsworthy items should submit articles to the Editor, On Campus, Public Information Office.
