On Campus FOR THE UC SANTA CRUZ COMMUNITY December 4, 1987 [Photograph] The slug and foe The library's slug exhibit The bright yellow banana slug (Ariolimax dolichophallus), which gained widespread notoriety in 1986 when it was adopted as the official mascot of the campus, is the subject of an extensive collection of color photographs, articles, and other materials on display through Sunday, December 20, on the main floor of McHenry Library. (continued on back page) Everything about parking The Staff Committee Board and Transportation Committee are sponsoring a public forum to discuss faculty and staff parking issues on December 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. In the Health Center Conference Room. Richard Vasquez, chair of the Staff Committee, and Bob Jorgensen, chair of the Transportation Committee, ask that you send any questions or concerns you may have on the subject, in writing, to the Transportation Systems Management Team, c/o Jule Tanner, Parking Service, prior to December 10. Comparative information from other UC campuses will be available. Bring your lunch. Organizing retired faculty A statewide organization representing retired faculty from the University of California was created recently during a meeting of emeriti groups from all nine UC campuses. Albert Hofstadter, professor of philosophy emeritus from UCSC and chair of the new organization, says the aim of the Council of University of California Emeriti Associations (CUCEA) is to foster not only the welfare of council members but communication between the University and its emeriti community. Hofstadter says the CUCEA will assist campus emeriti associations keep informed about each other; maintain lists of emeriti, widows, and other survivors; seek to influence proposed University and legislative actions that concern emeriti; develop an information service for emeriti members of the University Faculty Welfare Committee; and help campus emeriti associations develop their roles in the Academic Senate and their services to emeriti. Upon retirement, the title "professor emeritus" is conferred on every professor and associate professor. The title suffix "emeritus" is given upon retirement to other members of the University's Academic Senate or to nonmembers who meet criteria established (continued on back page) On Campus is published by the Public Information Office for the faculty, staff, and students of UC Santa Cruz. [Photograph] John Eddy Nature's secret diaries Reading Nature's Secret Diaries: The History of Earth's Environment" is the topic of a free, public talk to be given by the distinguished solar physicist and historian, John Allen Eddy, Friday night, December 4, at (continued on back page) AIDS lectures As part of its efforts to raise campus awareness regarding the disease of AIDS, the Personnel Office is sponsoring two lunch-time seminars. Gerald Landers, director of the Santa Cruz AIDS Project, will speak on Wednesday, December 9, on "AIDS In Santa Cruz—The Local Angle." Dr. George Wolfe, director of Student Health Services, will speak Wednesday, January 13 on "AIDS 1988-An Update." From different perspectives, the speakers will discuss the impact of AIDS in the workplace. Both lectures will take place in the Cowell Student Health Center Conference Room, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. There will be time for questions. Faculty and staff are welcome to bring bag lunches.
