On Campus FOR THE UC SANTA CRUZ COMMUNITY December 1, 1989 UCSC finds space for elders In response to the city of Santa Cruz's urgent request to house elders displaced by the October 17 earthquake, UCSC is providing land for a temporary mobile-home park in campus Inclusion Area D, off Empire Grade northwest of the main campus entrance. "While suffering from the quake ourselves, we realize that our situation is relatively minor compared to the hardships being endured by the city and our community," said Chancellor Robert Stevens. Through the offer of campus land, we are responding to the city's critical need to house seniors tragically displaced by the earthquake." In the wake of the disastrous quake, several retirement hotels have been demolished or await the wrecking ball: the Casa Del Rey, the Colonial, and the Saint George. The Palomar, which may be saved, would take nearly a year to repair. Initial estimates by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) that the elders' housing needs could be met by the general housing market have been revised in recent days. "The supply of short- term housing has evaporated far faster than anyone anticipated," says Michael Houlemard, UCSC director of community planning and land development. The latest report from the counrywide Housing Recovery Task Force estimates that at least 400 senior residents of the county need interim or permanent housing as a result of the quake. The mobile-home park will occupy up to nine acres of university land for approximately eighteen months. The site will be managed by the Santa Cruz County Housing Authority. An access road will be constructed to the area, where most utilities are already In place. As many as 100 three-bedroom coaches will be placed in the new park, which is within easy walking distance of local bus service. Deadline: For the issue of: December 6 December 15 December 19 January 5 Shop via shuttle A holiday-shopping shuttle now links UCSC and downtown Santa Cruz and will continue through Thursday, December 21. The free noontime shuttle, also provided in 1988, has special importance this year as downtown merchants work to rebuild after the October 17 earthquake. This year UCSC is footing the entire bill for the shuttle, which in previous years has been shared by the Santa Cruz Downtown Association and the city of Santa Cruz. The shuttle operates weekdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on a fifteen- minute schedule, stopping at all Metro/shuttle stops on campus. The route downtown forms a loop that includes Front Street, the Metro Center, and the new shopping pavilions. The shuttle returns to the campus via High Street. The shuttles— actually Santa Cruz Airporter vans contracted by UCSC— are clearly marked, and shuttle stops are signed accordingly. Riders are asked to hail the vans to avoid confusion with regular campus shuttles. Shuttle-route maps are being distributed to the campus community; maps of the downtown shopping area, including the Phoenix Pavilions, are available in the Parking and Public Information offices and on each shuttle. A reminder: UCSC faculty and staff are eligible for free SCMTD bus passes, available for the asking through the Parking Office. Holiday party All staff and faculty are cordially invited to the annual holiday party at University House, hosted by Chancellor Robert Stevens and Katherine Booth Stevens. The festivities will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, December 15.
