Eighty-six guests donated $125 each to attend the affair, which was hosted by Chancellor Robert Stevens and his wife Katherine. The menu featured hors d'oeuvres, entrees, and desserts from several area restaurateurs and caterers, as well as local wines and other beverages. The contributions will benefit a variety of public programs at the Long Marine Lab, including docent training, educational displays, and a planned visitors' center. In addition, the donations will help create a fund for emergency marine animal care and will support awards for UCSC students conducting research in Monterey Bay. The next major fund-raising event for the Long Marine Lab is the "Whale of an Auction," scheduled for March 29 in the Porter Dining Hall.
