COLLEGE VIII GENERAL STUDENT MEETING (reported by Bob Kibrick) On Friday, November 17, at 12 noon in the Crown-Merrill Recreation Room, there was a general meeting for all College VIII students. Approximately 25 people were present. The following is a brief summary of what happened. The first order of business involved the structure of the steering committee. There was discussion as to whether the committee should be elected, whether it should operate under a set of by-laws, and whether or not a poll of the general membership should be conducted each time the committee plans to appropriate College VIII student funds. Discussion centered around this last point, and it was proposed that a $25 limit might be established, such that amounts less than this could be appropriated without taking a general vote. A question was raised as to what issues other than appropriations might also require a general vote. At this point, there was a general reluctance to decide these issues simply because there were not enough people present to be adequately representative. Having reached this impasse, it was suggested that the steering committee could better serve the students if the responsibilities, procedures, and powers of the committee could be more clearly defined. Concern was also expressed that since the committee members had not been elected, that the committee was not legitimately a representative group. As a result, it was agreed that the committee should draft a written proposal defining how the committee is to function, and that this proposal should be submitted on a written ballot to a vote of the general membership. The steering committee will meet on Tuesday evening, November 21, at 7:30 PM in the College VIII lounge in order to discuss this proposal. The committee has agreed to have a final draft completed by November 26, so that ballots can be distributed along with the newsletter on November 28. The result of the balloting will be anounced at the next general meeting, on Friday, December 1, at 12 noon in the Crown-Merrill Recreation Room. The next issue discussed was whether College VIII should contribute $50, along with the other colleges, to cover the expense of sending a UCSC student representative to Regent's meetings. Questions were raised as to whether such a representative would have any effective voice at meetings, and as to whether or not funding could be obtained more appropriately from other channels. As the person who was to come speak about this did not show up, it was agreed to defer action until more information was available. Next, it was reported that the results of the poll regarding funding of the College VIII party at the farm indicated approval of the appropriation, although it was agreed that such a method of appropriation should be avoided in the future. Finally, it was decided that 2 students should be elected by the general membership to represent student opinion at faculty meetings. Any interested students should sign up in Lynn Appley's office (Room 25). An informal coffee hour will be scheduled at a time mutually convenient to the candidates, so that students will have an opportunity to get acquainted with them.
