THE OLD SOLE Stevenson College Newsletter November 23, 1987 Season's first storm: & an important deadline Stevenson residents got their first "real" taste of Santa Cruz rain last week. Though it was nowhere near being a "big" storm, anyone caught out in it would have found it to be deceptively wet. The fast- moving storm dropped almost an inch and a half of rain on Santa Cruz. Of course the sodden misery is quickly forgotten once the sun reappears. Ironically, rainly weather often means warmer weather. In Santa Cruz, the coldest nights are also the clearest nights. The best raingear for the central coast is probably that made of lightweight gore-tex or similar materials. They shed water easily, dry quickly once indoors and can be worn over sweaters, shirts pullovers, or any combination of layers. Most locals will recommend shopping for quality parkas and jackets in outdoor or mountaineering store, rather than retail department store. Over a period of years, the additional cost is well worth the investment. Of course the best way to acquire a nice rain parka is to score one for Christmas. Important Housing Deadline: if you plan to move off campus for Winter quarter (and are eligible- see contract), you must file a contract cancellation in the college office no later than Friday, December 4. Campus News Digest Open forum on lower campus development Those interested in parking, transportation and general development issues are invited to attend an open forum Wednesday, Dec. 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the Barn Theatre. Landscape Architect Consultant Ken Wormhoudt will present slides on possible changes in the lower campus area, including the main entrance to the campus. Public comment and discussion is invited on the issues of parking needs, bicycle access, traffic, signs, landscaping and related subjects. Possible changes in the area of the Carriage House, Cardiff House and campus service buildings will be discussed in some detail. For more information phone ext. 2334. Town-dwellers sound off Off-campus students have an opportunity to "sound off" about the state of Santa Cruz's rental housing this week. A survey, sent to more than 1,000 students by the UCSC off-campus housing office, is an "unprecedented chance for Stevenson students to tell the administration what they think about their housing situation," according to Doreen Schack, off-campus housing coordinator. "Students constantly tell us that it's impossible to find housing in this community. But in order to have an impact on UCSC's housing policies, we need more than anecdotes," says Schack. "We need hard evidence." Students are urged to take the ten minutes required to complete the survey and return it. It's Been an Honor The College needs to compile an on-going record of Stevenson student acheivements, awards, prizes, scholarships etc. for official recognition. If you have been so honored please inform the college office.
