On Campus FOR THE UC SANTA CRUZ COMMUNITY TED CAMPBELL IS NEW EXTENSION DEAN Theodore "Ted" Campbell, formerly director of Extension Classes and assistant professor at the University of Minnesota, has joined UCSC as dean of University Extension and director of Summer Session. He succeeds Carl Tjerandsen, Extension's founding dean, who is retiring October 31. At Minnesota, Campbell directed a continuing education program which enrolled 37,000 individuals last year. He earned his M.A. in English and Ph.D. in higher education at Minnesota and taught literature, writing,and education courses there in addition to his eleven-year career with Extension. He, his wife JoAnne, and their four children live in Scotts Valley. Tjerandsen came to the Santa Cruz campus twelve years ago to develop a continuing education program serving nine central California counties. Under his direction, Extension's enrollments have grown from a few hundred that first year to 22,000 in 1976-77. He also has headed Summer Session since its inception in 1969. PROVOST BLAKE TO SPEAK BEFORE AFFILIATES J. Herman Blake, professor of sociology and provost of Oakes College, will be the second speaker in this year's Public Affairs Lectures, sponsored by the UCSC Affiliates. Blake's lecture/slide presentation, entitled "The Quest for Community," will be about his work in the Sea Islands of Georgia and South Carolina. The November 9 lunch and lecture will be held at the Dream Inn from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. Reservations must be made in advance by calling the Public Affairs Office, X2530. Cost is $5, payable at the door. TOTH EATS LUNCH On Thursday, November 3, the third Teacher on the Hill Round Table luncheon of the fall quarter will be held from noon to 2 p.m. in the College Five Served Dining Room. Sharing some of their teaching/learning experiments in retrospect will be Peter Scott talking about his energy course, Todd Wipke on using computer models, and John Pearse reviewing his multidisciplinary approach to the study of sea otters. Frank Andrews will moderate. Advance reservations for the no-cost lunch should be made through Lee Jones, 321 Oakes, X4380 or X2813. PETER GRAFF NAMED DIRECTOR FOR CAREER PLANNING OFFICE Peter Graff, formerly an assistant dean of student services at UC, Davis and at the University of Guam, has been named director of the UCSC Career Planning and Placement Office. Graff, 44, has practical experience in the field, having worked as an agricultural salesman, sugar- beet produce coordinator, farm manager, cattle raiser, financial officer, business teacher, and assistant dean while earning a Co-op Education Certificate at UC, Davis, an M.A. in business administration at Golden Gate University, and a Ph.D. at California Western University. After five years at Davis in administration work, Graff taught business subjects at the University of Guam where he also served as director of the career planning program. The UCSC Career Planning Office, located in Room 350 of the McHenry Library, conducts workshops on value and skill development and on the preparation of applications to graduate, professional, law, and medical schools; does individual advising; offers educational career placement services; coordinates recruitment and career information sessions; offers pretesting programs; and maintains a career planning library. ICE SKATING, CLAMMING, BAGEL MAKING, DANCING—ALL FOR YOU FROM OPER The November schedule of recreational and intramural programs offered by the Office of Physical Education and Recreation is brimful of activities and rec trips for the UCSC community. Call Karol, X2806, Skip, X4182, or Terry, X4220, for date, time, and more information about: pumpkin carving, apple bobbing, free bike clinics, ice skating at Eastridge, doughnut making, clamming, table tennis, new games, a fitness check using Cooper's twelve-minute test, bagel making, crabbing, mixed doubles tennis, batik, square dancing, motorcycle riding, and the free, annual Turkey Trot (scheduled in the new eastside gym November 22 at 4:15 p.m.). CROWN-MERRILL SCIENCE TABLE CONTINUES WITH LIST OF GUESTS The Crown-Merrill Science Table, an informal dinner and discussion series organized by Loki Pandey and Joel Primack, will continue through December 5 with a variety of guest speakers. The group meets each Monday evening at 5:45 for dinner in either the Merrill Baobab Room or Crown Dining Hall A. Everyone is welcome to attend any evening of interest.
