On Campus FOR THE UC SANTA CRUZ COMMUNITY LETTER TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY I would like to thank each of you for your support in making the inauguration and symposium a success. Many of the guests commented on the evident spirit and pride of the campus community and left with very favorable feelings toward Santa Cruz. The dedication and unity displayed last week are extremely important to develop the necessary support and goodwill, both on and off campus, that will enable the success of our renewal effort. Again, I thank you and I ask for your continued backing in the months ahead. Sincerely, Robert L. Sinsheimer Chancellor LIBERAL ARTS TO BE TOTH TOPIC It's back to the College Five Served Dining Room for the next Teacher on the Hill Round Table Luncheon, Thursday, November 9, from noon to 2 p.m. The topic will be Liberal Arts Education: Why Do We Need It? Ideas presented during the recent symposium will doubtless contribute to some stimulating discussion, says coordinator Frank Andrews. Discussion leaders will be: Michael Cowan (Merrill/literature), "The Case for General Education"; Jim Pepper (College Eight/ environmental studies), "Liberal Arts in the Professional World"; and George Von der Muhll (College Five/politics), "Breadth Requirements." "Nearly 50 people attended the last TOTH lunch. The College Five Served Dining Room doesn't hold that many, so we suggest you get your reservation in early, says Andrews. Call Lee Jones, X4380/2814, or Frank Andrews, X2246, for reservations. CONFERENCE ON INNOVATION AND BUSINESS A three-day "Conference on Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and the University," sponsored by the National Science Foundation, will bring a roster of prominent leaders in business, education, government, and science to Oakes College November 8, 9, and 10. Conference participants will explore ways to cultivate technical innovation and entrepreneurial endeavors in a university setting. They will review the activities of the four Innovation Centers already in operation at universities in the U.S. and discuss the potentials and limitations of such center, among other topics. The conference is being organized by Narinder S. Kapany, himself an innovator-entrepreneur with over 100 patents to his credit, who is an adjunct professor of sciences and director of the Oakes College Science Program here. FOREIGN STUDENTS HERE FOR HOLIDAYS Forty-four international students are living and studying at Merrill College this year at the Center for American Language Studies. They are all interested in American culture as well as English language and look forward to spending time with American families. The students will be staying at UCSC during the Thanksgiving break and over the Christmas holidays. If anyone would like to invite a student to share in holiday activities, or simply to visit at another time, please contact Judy Liles at X2024. Your hospitality will be very much appreciated by our students, says Judy. OPEN HOUSE AT NEW LONG LAB The people at UCSC's Center for Coastal Marine Studies are about to celebrate completion of phase I construction at their new Joseph M. Long Marine Laboratory on Younger Lagoon (just west of Natural Bridges State Park). On Friday, December 1, the new oceanside facility will be dedicated in the morning, then opened for inspection to all the campus community from 3 to 5:30 that afternoon. Another Open House for all the Monterey Bay community, including campus families, will be held on Saturday, December 2, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The lab contains a complete seawater pumping system, three outdoor tanks to hold small marine mammals, several haul-out pools, an aquarium building and a research support building- all situated at the ocean's edge, just a ten-minute drive from the campus. Center faculty and students will be on hand to explain the work being done in various parts of the lab, and one room during the Open House will feature marine art work and projects done by students. BLOODMOBILE TO ROLL ONTO CAMPUS The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at the East Field House on Friday, November 17, from noon to 5 p.m. "Please take a few minutes to help this worthy cause," urges blood drive chair Peter Wilson. No appointment or other preparation is necessary to donate blood. Just drop by the Field House and sign in. 6 NOVEMBER 1978 Remove 11-29-78
