STOP THE FREEWAY GROUP
Last week a group of university personel, faculty and concerned
towns people met to form a coalition that would concern itself
immediately with securing a moratorium on all construction of
freeways. The group similarly seeks to prevent the immediate
destruction of the coastline north of Santa Cruz which has recently
been acquired by the large developers who. wish to put a housing
tract in the area. In urging a moratorium on all freeway construction
the group speaks for many of us in the Santa Cruz community
who want to see comprehensive plans developed for the implementation
of mass transit and the preservation of the downtown area, the
beach areas, old houses and clean air. Even a terse perusal of the
path that Route 5 will cement over will show irreplacable damage.
Similarly, Route 4 is only less destructive. Petitions are being
circulated by various .students on campus and in town urging a halt
to freeway construction until long range development and transit
plans are made by city, county or state agencies. Supervisors
McCally and Forbes have recently proposed such studies to the
county Board of Supervisors. Along with the Anti-Five group
mentioned in the last issue of the Libre, the Coastal Coalition
needs the support of university students and faculty members at the
October 7th hearing, 10 AM in the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium,
Buyers will be provided free of cost at the Cowell Circle at 9:30.
Also on Monday of this week the City on the Hill Press will carry a
complete analysis of the routes proposed, implications for smog and
long range growth of Santa Cruz. Those students wishing to help
with this on-going project should contact Dorothy Cope at 203
Segri Place, Santa Cruz, 423-1288. Be at the hearing Tuesday,
October 7th.

CALL FOR A VIETNAM MORATORIUM
Ending the war in Vietnam is the most Important task facing
the American nation. Over the last few years, millions of Americans
have campaigned, protested; and demonstrated against the war. Few
now defend the war, yet it continues. Death and destruction are
unabated; bombs and fire continue to devastate South Vietnam,
Billions of dollars are spent on war while the urgent domestic
problems of this country remain unattended. Moreover, the war has
had a corrupting influence on every aspect of American life, and
much of the national discontent can be traced to its influence.
The discredited policies of the past which have brought about
this American tragedy have not been changed. We follow the same
military advice which has created a futile and bloody conflict while
we cling to the same policies, which have caused the Paris
