From the Sentinel: "A forest fire burned about 10 acres on the site of the future University of California at Santa Cruz yesterday afternoon. The fire, of unknown cause, destroyed or damaged pine, fir, redwood and underbrush on the upper northern portion of the campus, in an area cited for future expansion. It was halted about a half mile from the area currently being prepared for the first buildings and where special dedication ceremonies will be held Friday at 4:30 p.m... About 50 men, mostly from the California Youth Authority barracks at Camp Ben Lomond, finally reached the area and brought the fire under containment by 8 p.m. Among the first on the scone were Chancellor and Mrs. Dean McHenry, Campus Inspector Herbert Raymond and Barbara Sheriff, administrative assistant to the chancellor."
